From a Simple Stitch to a Signature — The Story Behind Every Atelier Sylwia Bag

There are stories that begin with grand plans and clear visions. Mine did not. It began with a diary.

I needed something to protect my planner — nothing more, nothing less. So I picked up a hook and some cotton yarn and crocheted a simple little clutch. No pattern, no ambition. Just a practical solution, made by hand.

Then my daughter saw it.

She loved it so much that she took it to school to protect her reading book. And one day, her teacher noticed it. She admired it, asked about it — and so I made one for her too. That teacher carried her clutch everywhere. People stopped her to ask where she had found it.

And just like that, the idea was born.

Following the Thread

I have always loved handbags. I have always loved working with my hands. And I have always needed to create. When those three things came together, something shifted.

I began making more bags — experimenting with cotton yarn, then wool, trying whatever I could find. Each piece taught me something new. I played with shapes, with textures, with structure. And then one day, I discovered plastic grid canvas. It changed everything. Suddenly my bags had stability without weight — a lightness that felt right.

I kept going. I started lining the bags by hand with fabric on the inside. I tried different yarns, different techniques. I wanted to make something that no one else was making — and slowly, I realised I had.

The Choice to Go Further

But technique alone was not enough. I wanted quality that lasts — the kind you can feel the moment you hold a piece in your hands.

I live in Abruzzo, a region I love deeply. A land with a centuries-old tradition of sheep farming and textile craftsmanship, where some of Italy's finest natural fibres are still produced by small, dedicated makers. It felt natural — necessary, even — to bring that heritage into my work.

And so I made a decision: to source as locally as possible. Merino, silk wool, cashmere — from small producers in Abruzzo first, and from Italy wherever else. Every metal detail chosen to last, to never tarnish or fade. Every lining sewn by hand. Every piece built to accompany its owner for years, not seasons.

What Abruzzo Means to Me

When people carry an Atelier Sylwia bag, I want them to carry a little piece of this place with them. The quiet mountains, the unhurried pace, the pride in making things well and making them to last.

I do not make fast fashion. I make one bag at a time, with my hands, in my atelier — because I believe that the things we choose to carry should mean something.

That first little clutch, made to protect a diary, started all of this. I am grateful every day that my daughter took it to school.
